Technical Support Unit (TSU)

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India released “Guidelines for Standardization of Labour Rooms (SLR) at Delivery Points” in the month of April 2016 and conducted sensitisation workshops to the states in October 2016. Subsequently, Government of Telangana quickly adopted the country’s guideline on Standardisation of labour rooms with an aim to improve the coverage and quality of institutional deliveries at each level of health care. The State Government is keen to address the high rates of C-section in the state and track high risk pregnancies.
  • The Technical Support Unit (TSU) team with the funding and technical support from UNICEF is established at IIHFW in collaboration with Commissioner Health and Family Welfare, Telangana state to support the activities of Standardisation of labour rooms through a team of consultants who assess, plan and monitor implementation of SLR. The standardisation focuses on five important areas including space and layouts, human resource requirements, equipment and supplies, consumables and protocols. The birthing units that were assessed are the high load delivery points. The assessment was taken up in a phased manner.

    • To address skills and competencies of the health care providers working in the birthing units
    • To support the state in optimisation of C-section deliveries.
    • To support professional midwifery initiative, the first of its kind in the country
